This glossary contains the words that you will encounter in civil engineering.

Abrasion
noun
the process of scraping or wearing something away.
Example: The metal is resistant to abrasion.

Abutment
noun
a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span, e.g., at the ends of a bridge.
Example: The first bridge was of timber with stone abutments.

bending
verb
to constrain or strain to tension by curving
Example: Her bicycle's back wheel got bent in the crash.

estimator
noun
a person who estimates the price, value, number, quantity, or extent of something.
Example: Yet, as our covid-19 risk estimator in this issue explains, the data already cast some light on what puts you at risk if you are diagnosed with the disease.

noun
the area of variation between upper and lower limits on a particular scale.
Example: the cost is thought to be in the range of $1-5 million a day
